Connie Chung, pioneer news anchor and reporter, was the first woman to co-anchor the CBS Evening News. Conniewas also the first Asian to anchor any news program at CBS, NBC, and ABC. Connie was born in Washington, D.C. in 1946, after her parents and four older sisters emigrated from China.

She started her career in 1969 at age 23 at a local TV station in her hometown. In 1971, she joined CBS News at the coveted Washington Bureau, covering politics, the White House, Capitol Hill, State Department and Pentagon for theCBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. Connie’s political coverage stretched back to 1972, including presidential campaigns, conventions, and election nights.She anchored the Saturday NBC Nightly News and the Sunday CBS Evening News and anchored and reported atABC News, as well.

In May 2023, the New York Times Opinion Section carried a front-page story entitled “Generation Connie.” In it, Connie discovered a generation of Asian parents named their baby daughters “Connie” after her. Connie never knew about her namesakes and never fathomed the impact she had made. She was inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame in 2016.

Never would I run to the ladies' room crying and shaking. A toughie, I determined there was no crying in news, just the way, years later, Tom Hanks shouted at his all-female team in A League of Their Own: "There is no crying in baseball!"
