Virginia Cross is a lifelong educator and Native American activist of the Muckleshoot tribe whose long service as director of Indian Education for the Auburn School District helped to shape many programs for Native American students in Washington State. The Virginia Cross Native American Education Center, operated by the Auburn School District in partnership with the Muckleshoot Tribe, was named in her honor. Under her leadership on the Muckleshoot Tribal Council for more than three decades, the Muckleshoots reclaimed tribal destiny, building a better future for all tribal members. Virginia Cross was born in 1939 in Auburn, Washington, to George Senior and Alvina (King George) Cross. She received her Bachelor of Arts in education at the University Puget Sound in 1973 and a Masters of Art at the University Washington in 1976.

“I've tried to be in the community as someone that people can talk to, someone that they can come to for information. I just listen and try to do something about their concerns.”
